Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition, with the 1874 printing to be the second printing, this copy is printed by Geo. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. Beautiful clean book with the original end papers and a crisp binding. The description of Nemo's ship the Nautilus was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Originally written in 1870 by the French author Jules Verne, it was highly acclaimed when released and still remains one of the classic science fiction adventure novels to this day. Our copy appears to equate to Number 6 in the celestial spine series produced by this publisher in the early 20th century. Overall a 'Good+' copy of a rare and attractive edition. Foxing to text-block and marginal foxing throughout. The front free end paper has been removed so the book opens on to the half-title. Original blue cloth, gilt title to spine with accompanying fish design, printed title to upper cover with colour plate decoration featuring a giant squid. With colour frontispiece, 3 other colour plates and 12 black & white plates.
